History

The Creation of PTSP
In 1995, graduate student Allyson Tintiangco Cubales and SPEAR Project Director Dawn Mabalon began dialogue on their transfer student experiences as undergraduates. They realized that many transfers students within Samahang Pilipino, the main Pilipino organization on campus, experienced loneliness and alienation. Allyson and Dawn also realized that the transfer rates to UCLA were incredibly low, and began to talk about ways they could change these issues. In the fall of 1995, Allyson and Dawn co-taught a class that focused on researching Pilipino transfer issues as a part of Allyson's dissertation: the students within this first class then created PTSP- the beginnings of the organization we see today. In 1996, PTSP became an independent UCLA student organization founded on the 3 R's: Retention, Recruitment, and Research.
The Implementation of the Bayanihan Project
In 2005, Theresa Toledo and Jean Paul Bareng Schumacher co-founded PTSP's Bayanihan Project in order to address the transfer needs of community college students through peer advising sessions and workshops at El Camino and Glendale Community Colleges. Though the project ended up discontinued in 2007 due to lack of support, it ended up returning in the form of SPACE's first community college site at El Camino the following year.
In partnership with SPACE, PTSP provides peer advising and resources to students at El Camino Community College in order to increase their access to higher education and their chances of transferring to a university.
The Formation of Student Empowerment Networking Day (SEND)
In 2006, the first SEND (Student Emowerment Networking Day) was created in order to ease the transition of UCLA transfer admits into UCLA. SEND incorporated workshops, a campus tour, and student speakers to share useful knowledge and experiences from PTSP members to new UCLA Pilipino transfer admits.
In 2012, PTSP, along with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and other transfer components, decide to have a joint Diversity Lunch/Night Talent Show and to create an overnight host option for the transfer yield events. The Diversity Lunch and the Night Talent Show were the first steps towards joint collaboration between the Transfer orgs. The overnight host option was created so transfer admits could experience living in a dorm and also to make travel convenient for those who could attend AAP Scholars Day the next day.
